Goal Setting
  • GOAL: DEFINITION

An objective, a standard, an aim of some action, or a level or performance or proficiency.

  • OBJECTIVE GOALS

Objective goals focus on attaining a specific standard of proficiency on a task, usually within a specific time.

  • SUBJECTIVE GOALS

Subjective goals are general statements of intent but are not stated in measurable, objective terms. Some examples are:

    1. Outcome Goals: Focus upon the outcomes of particular events and usually (but not always) involve interpersonal comparison of some kind
    2. Performance Goals: Specify an end product of performance that will be achieved by the performer relatively independent of other performers
    3. Process Goals: Specify the processes in which the performer will engage during the performance
TaoSport Goals

Goals are the beacons that keep the TaoAthlete on a successful, exciting and fulfilling journey. The athlete needs them as markers or as encouragement toward optimal performance. Trying to accomplish goals for the sake of achievement alone crates tension and pressure for many athletes. If this is not accomplished than, there will be difficulty in separating the self from the true meaning of sport. This will allow the athlete to become fully immersed in the moment. Once goals that have been set by the athlete have been realized then newer, more challenging ones will be articulated to keep aliveness in the process and aid in the quest for self-understanding.

Keys to Goal Setting - Ask yourself the following:
  • Is this goal attainable?
  • Is the goal challenging?
  • Is the goal under my control?
  • What will I be doing to achieve this goal?
  • How will I measure the goal?
  • How much time will I need to attain the goal?
  • What resources will I need to achieve the goal?
  • How will others be affected by your goals?
  • What is the cost of achieving the goal?
Short-term goals:
  • Should be realistic and attainable
  • Will build confidence
  • Keep the athlete motivated and enthusiastic
  • Lessen the fear of the overwhelming long term goals
Long-term goals:
  • Keeps the athlete focused upon product in the future
  • It is the overall blueprint of outcome and performance goals
